If you think Denton’s nightlife boils down to square one honky-tonks and frat-house karaoke, you’re wrong. We’ve got a bar where you can get a boozy blue slushie at 1 AM and a kava lounge that will apologize to your liver.

There’s a cigar shop where a hostess will pair your smoke like a sommelier and a pizzeria serving potato-topped pies in a yoga studio. I have strong feelings about all of it.

Read on, but bring a designated driver and a stretchy waistband.

Friendly staff, great ciders
Private rooms for gaming sessions
BYOF with attentive drink service
Comfy couches and ample space
Members save ten percent

I walked into d20 Tavern expecting a chalk-dusted dungeon crawl of a bar, but what I got was a living room for nerds with a fully stocked cider arsenal. The staff didn't just greet me; they remembered my drink order from a single visit, which is more than my own cat does. Private rooms for gaming sessions mean you can roll dice without some rando bumping your elbow, and the couches swallow you whole. BYOF (bring your own food) with attentive drink service is a dangerous combo for my wallet. Members save ten percent, which offsets the shame of losing at Settlers of Catan. Comfy, roomy, and genuinely friendly. I'd live here if they had showers.

Beloved local karaoke spot

Bramblitt's Yellow Dog Art Bar & Gallery is where my liver goes to get cultured. The walls are a glorious riot of local art that I pretend to understand while sipping a cocktail that tastes like it was painted by a madman. Karaoke here isn't an afterthought; it's a religious experience, and Grace, the host, is the high priestess of terrible singing. She made me feel like my off-key rendition of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' was a masterpiece. Full-service bar artistry means the drinks arrive looking like they belong in a museum, but they don't scold you for drinking them. This is the bar for people who want to be seen, hear music, and not care if they're good at it.

Highlights
Cozy, classy, comfortable vibe
Excellent wine flights
Live music worth staying for
Friendly, accommodating service
Charming patio with lights

Steve's Wine Bar is the kind of place that makes me want to put on a cardigan and pretend I understand tannins. It's cozy, classy, and comfortable in a way that says, 'Yes, you may fall asleep on this velvet chair, and we'll only judge you slightly.' The wine flights are excellent, a little journey through grape-land that made me feel sophisticated until the third pour. Live music drifted through the room, and I stayed far longer than planned, nodding along like I knew the songs. The service was friendly to the point of suspicious, and the patio, strung with lights, is charming enough to make me forget my allergies. A gem, but don't tell anyone.

Highlights
Relaxing non-alcoholic tea haven
Friendly, creative kava-tenders
Great live music vibe
Fair prices, varied drink menu

I'm a grump who likes his drinks with a kick of alcohol, so walking into The Kava Bar Denton felt like a betrayal of my own principles. But then I tasted the kava, and I realized I was just being an idiot. This is a relaxing, non-alcoholic tea haven that somehow doesn't feel like a church basement. The kava-tenders are friendly and creative, mixing up concoctions that taste like they were dreamed up by a very relaxed hippie with a chemistry degree. The live music vibe is great, and the prices are fair, which is more than I can say for any 'mocktail' bar that charges fifteen bucks for sparkling water. I left feeling calm, weirdly clear-headed, and ready to apologize to my liver.

Highlights
Killer margarita flight options
Generous portions leave you stuffed
Warm salsa with real kick
Community-loving, Charitable bar
Sweet service, memorable Chrissyrita

Wild Cactus Cantina & Grill is the bar equivalent of a hug from a big, slightly drunk Mexican grandmother. The margarita flight options are killer, but I nearly fought a stranger for the last sample of the Chrissyrita, which is sweet, memorable, and dangerous. Portions are so generous I had to unbutton my jeans, but that warm salsa with real kick kept me eating like a fool. The staff is sweet, and the place clearly loves its community, which I know because they didn't kick me out when I spilled queso on their floor. This is a bar that gives back, even if it gives you a food coma.

Miss Billa's expert guidance
Sweet, welcoming hospitality
Great cigar and pairing recommendations
Perfect for Father's Day
A host who elevates bars

Denton Cigar Co is not just a bar; it's a masterclass in hospitality, and Miss Billa is the professor everyone wants to impress. She guided me through cigar choices with the patience of a saint and the knowledge of a historian, and her pairing recommendations were so spot-on I felt like I'd been smoking for years instead of being a novice who burns his fingers. The hospitality is sweet, welcoming, and borderline embarrassing because she treated me like royalty while I was sweating from nicotine. Great for Father's Day, but I'm going back solo, just for the conversation. She elevates this place from a mere shop to a sanctuary, and I'll smoke a dirty diaper if she says it pairs well.

Highlights
Falafel burger worth lunch
Spicy hummus adds kick
Fast, flavorful kitchen service
Menu glitches, tasty fixes

Layalina Mediterranean Restaurant and Lounge surprised me in the best way, mostly because I came for a drink and stayed for the falafel burger. That burger is worth a lunch trip alone, crispy on the outside, soft inside, and somehow not a greasy mess. The spicy hummus has a kick that made my eyes water, but in a good way, like a slap from a beloved aunt. The kitchen is fast and flavorful, which is rare for a place that also tries to be a lounge. There were a few menu glitches, but they fixed them fast with a smile. I'll be back, even if the falafel causes my coworkers to hate me.

Fresh, clean, light pizza
Homemade vanilla ice cream
Great beer selection
Yoga studio doubles as seating
Patata pizza: potato magic

Aglio Pizzeria serves pizza so fresh, clean, and light that I thought I was accidentally at a yoga retreat. The crust is thin, the toppings are bright, and the whole thing feels like it's apologizing for being a pizza. But then you taste the patata pizza, and you realize potatoes on pizza are a divine act, not a crime. The homemade vanilla ice cream is the perfect gut-bomb finish. Great beer selection, too. The seating is a yoga studio, which means I spent half my meal trying not to cross my legs in a warrior pose. This place is a delightful contradiction, and I appreciate the chaos.

Highlights
Cheap, massive, boozy slushies
Corgi-approved drink stop
Posted hours are a lie

Eskimo Hut is a miracle of modern alcohol delivery: cheap, massive, boozy slushies that taste like childhood, if childhood involved questionable life choices. The posted hours are a lie, which I learned after stumbling in at 1 AM expecting a slushie and finding a dark, locked door. When they are open, the slushies are so enormous I had to ask for a second straw. A corgi outside gave me a look of approval as I sipped a blue concoction that would make a Smurf blush. This is the place to go when you want to forget your name, not when you want a fancy cocktail. Bring cash, bring friends, bring a towel.

Highlights
Huge candy and honey stick range
Vintage Hershey bars in stock
Apple cinnamon aroma greets you

Atomic Candy is not a bar in the traditional sense, but I'll be damned if it doesn't serve up a sugar high that rivals any whiskey. The moment you walk in, that apple cinnamon aroma hits you like a warm, sticky wave, and you suddenly remember being six years old at the county fair. Huge candy and honey stick range, plus vintage Hershey bars that taste like they were left over from a 1950s bomb shelter. I bought a honey stick, and I suspect I'll now be banned from the dentist office. If you want to get drunk on nostalgia, this is the place. Bring a kid as an excuse.

Great for big groups
Accessible for disabled guests
Awesome facility for events
Perfect for Pink Floyd fans
Educational programs worth trying

UNT Sky Theater is the strangest 'bar' in Denton because there's not a single drink in sight, but I have never been more intoxicated by a laser show in my life. It's perfect for big groups because you can sprawl out over the benches and point at pretty lights like a caveman. The facility is awesome for events, and I was stunned by how accessible it is for disabled guests, which is rare for a place with such a geeky vibe. Pink Floyd fans will have a religious experience, and the educational programs are genuinely worth trying, even if you're a grump like me. I left with a headache and a smile, which is my ideal bar review.

Wildly good Bánh Mìs
Vegan options done right
Best Far East Philly
Speedy, friendly service
Pickled carrots for days

The Pickled Carrot is the kind of offbeat bar-adjacent spot that makes me believe in happy accidents. Their Bánh Mìs are wildly good, with pickled carrots that deserve their own fan club, and the vegan options are so solid I almost forgot to miss meat. The Far East Philly is the best I've had, and I've had a lot of sad Phillys in my time. Service is speedy and friendly, which is a miracle for a place that seems perpetually busy. I came for a drink and left with a sandwich that could solve world peace. The carrots are pickled for days, but my return visits are pickled for eternity.
